Dirk Kempthorne

Dirk Arthur Kempthorne ( born October 29, 1951 in San Diego, California) is an American politician ( Republican). He was on May 26, 2006 to January 20, 2009 Minister of the Interior of the United States under President George W. Bush.

He graduated in 1975 from his studies in political science at the University of Idaho. His political career began in 1986 as mayor of Boise from 1993 to 1999, he represented the interests of Idaho in the United States Senate. In 1999, he was the 30th Governor of this State. Between 2003 and 2004 he chaired the National Governors Association.

On 26 May 2006 his nomination was confirmed by the Senate Secretary of the Interior, and he came on the same day at his new office. A few hours earlier he had resigned as governor of Idaho. With the end of George W. Bush's presidency also Kempthorne resigned in January 2009 from the government.
