Food is a municipality in the Belgian province of Antwerp with 18,075 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2012). The municipality is situated on the border with the Netherlands. South of Essen is Kalmthout. The next Dutch community north of the border is Roosendaal, North Brabant.

Food has hold a border station on the railway line Antwerp - Roosendaal, in which both local and IR trains.

History

The place name appears as Esschen first time in a document from the year 1146. After 1159 the glory Esschen - Kalmthout that counted for a possession of the abbey Tongerlo until 1789 was formed. By the end of the 19th century, food was mainly agricultural. Since the beginning of the 20th century, its economy is linked to the nearby port of Antwerp.

Attractions

Worth seeing is the Bakkersmolen, the bakers mill, in the district Wildert. The system consists of a museum with historical bakery, steam engine and windmill.
