Historical flags

The first national flag of modern Myanmar, or Burma, emerged from a banner of resistance movement that fought against the Japanese occupation during World War II. This was red with a white star in the left upper canton. After independence, the country continued to the star in the blue Gösch and supplemented it with five smaller stars around him, which represented the ethnic groups. In 1974, Myanmar was a socialist republic, which was reflected on the symbolism of the flag. On January 3, 1974, a cogwheel and ears of rice was inserted into the blue Gösch who stood for industry and agriculture. The fourteen stars corresponded to the number of administrative units within the country. The colors have the following meaning:

  • Blue stands for peace and tranquility.
  • White expresses the purity.
  • Red symbolizes courage, solidarity and determination.

When changing the national flag has been specified, that the old flag had to be obtained from 1974 by someone who was born on a Tuesday. The new flag should be set for the first time from a Wednesday infants. One suspects astrological reasons behind this arrangement. The old flags should be burned.

Similarities

The color sequence and arrangement of the flag of Myanmar corresponds to the flag of Lithuania. In addition, Myanmar joins among the countries that use the Pan-African colors without reference to the African continent.

The flag of Myanmar used until 2010 was very similar to the flags of the Republic of China ( Taiwan) and Samoa. To Flag of Samoa there are no cultural or historical ties, but there are suspicions that the flag of Myanmar was designed by Kuomintang in Burma.

At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing Taiwanese sports fans waving the then still valid Flag of Myanmar, as it looks from a distance like the Taiwanese. Reason for this is that just as Chinese Taipei Taiwan can participate on a sports flag at the Games and the flag of Taiwan should not be used.
