Flemish Brabant

The province of Flemish Brabant (Dutch Provincie Vlaams-Brabant? / I ) is the youngest and smallest province of the Flemish Region of Belgium. It includes the Dutch-speaking northern part of the former province of Brabant and consists of the two districts of Halle- Vilvoorde and Leuven. The Brussels-Capital Region alone forms an enclave within the territory of the province.

The capital of Flemish Brabant is lion; the coat of arms shows the lion of Brabant with the Austrian shield, which on the affiliation of the Southern Netherlands (→ Austrian Netherlands) refers to the Habsburg Empire from the early 16th to the late 18th century.

Geography

The province of Flemish Brabant covers an area of ​​2106.13 km ² and measures in east-west direction about 90 km in north-south direction about 40 km. The highest point in the province is located in Walshoutem, a borough of land with 137.33 m above sea level. The main watercourses of the region are the Dyle, the Demer and the Senne. Flemish Brabant bordered clockwise starting in the north by the provinces of Antwerp, Limburg, Liège, Walloon Brabant, Hainaut Province and East Flanders. The province surrounds the Brussels-Capital region completely.

History

The province was created on 1 January 1995 by the division of the old province of Brabant along the language border in the Dutch-speaking Flemish Brabant and the French-speaking province of Walloon Brabant.

Economy

In 2006, was the regional gross domestic product per capita, expressed in purchasing power standards, at 123.8 % of the average of the EU27. This Flemish Brabant was higher than the Belgian average of 118.5 % and was according to the Brussels-Capital Region and the Province of Antwerp, the strongest economic region of the country. The unemployment rate on 1 January 2006 at 6.35%.
