Geography
Illerkirchberg is located about eight kilometers south of Ulm and extends roughly between the Iller in the East and the Weihungstal in the West.
Geology
In Illerkirchberg is the type locality of Kirchberger layers. The clay-rich, fossiliferous layers ( with shark teeth, brackish water clams, snails and fish) are part of the so-called brackish water molasses and were million years ago, around 17-18 in the age of the Miocene (Tertiary ) (Level Ottnang - Karpat; formerly Helvet ) deposited. The Kirchberger layers propagate initially in a narrow strip of Switzerland ( Schaffhausen ) Coming eastward. In the southeast, this deposition area then opens so the Kirchberger layers can also be observed in deep boreholes east of Lake Chiemsee. In Illerkirchberg the layers occur mainly on steep slopes to the Iller, along the Weihungstals and Fischbachs in appearance (if they are not just from floor ). In the foothills of the Alps, the Kirchberger layers in the rule of several hundred meters of younger sediments of the Upper Freshwater are covered and can be found in large areas of the Molasse Basin only in deep boreholes. History
The church today Illerkirchberg emerged in the wake of Baden-Württemberg territorial reform on April 1, 1972 through the voluntary merger of the then independent municipalities Oberkirchberg and sub- Kirchberg.
Oberkirchberg
Oberkirchberg was first mentioned in 1087 as the seat of the Counts of Kirchberg. On the mountain spur that still bears the castle today, was probably already in the Middle Ages a castle. Under Kirchberg was also first mentioned in 1087 and was, like Oberkirchberg, the County of Kirchberg.
