Ilya Byakin

Ilya Vladimirovich Bjakin (Russian Илья Владимирович Бякин; born February 2, 1963 in Sverdlovsk, Russian SFSR ) is a former Russian ice hockey player and current coach. During his career he played among others in the National Hockey League for the Edmonton Oilers and San Jose Sharks.

Career

Ilya Bjakin was trained at the Spartak Sports School in Sverdlovsk and played from 1978 initially for sucking Sverdlovsk, before moving to Junost Sverdlovsk one year later. From 1980 he was active in the youth level of Awtomobilist Sverdlovsk and reached the age of 16 years with the junior team of the club the championship final, in which Awtomobilist the team from Chelyabinsk defeated with 14:1. 1983 Bjakin has been delegated to the capital to Spartak Moscow, where he played in the next three years and has been with the club once Soviet runner-up. In 1986 he returned to Awtomobilist and managed with this in 1987 the rise of the second-rate Perwaja League in the major league.

In the 1991/92 season back he came to Europe to Switzerland at that B -division club SC Rapperswil -Jona. NHL Entry Draft 1993, he was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the eleventh round at 267th place. The 1992/93 season he just spent the EV Landshut in the 1st Bundesliga. In 1993, he ventured then the jump to North America and played a total of 57 NHL games for the Oilers and San Jose Sharks. But a year later he went back to Russia. It was followed by two years of playing in Sweden Malmo IF and one season in the North American International Hockey League. In 1999, he returned to his native Russia. His last season 2003/ 04 he spent at HK Junost Minsk in the Belarusian Extraliga.

Internationally

Ilya Bjakin attended at junior level in two World and one European Championship. In the Under-18 European Championship 1981, he was European champion with the U18 selection of the Soviet Union. In the U-20 World Cup 1982 he was elected to the All- Star team of the tournament, the tournament a year later he won the gold medal, was honored as the best defender and re-elected to the All- Star team.

On September 10, 1982 Bjakin debuted for the Soviet national team in a game against Czechoslovakia. His international career was crowned with the gold medal at the Olympic Winter Games 1988. He was then awarded the entire team as Honored Master of Sports of the USSR.

For the Soviet national team, he scored a total of 21 goals in 109 internationals. The Ice Hockey World Championships in 1989 and 1990 and he became world champion with the Sbornaja. On 4 May 1991 he played his last match for the USSR and was then active for the Russian national team, with whom he won a further gold medal at the World Championships in 1993.

As a coach

Since his career end Bjakin works as a trainer. His first job he found in October 2004 at THK Tver, which he supervised until December of the same year as head coach. He then moved to HK MVD Tver, for whom he worked as an assistant coach and junior classifier to May 2005.

In the season 2005/ 06 he was employed as head coach of CSKA Moscow II, who took part in the Perwaja league. Between June 2007 and October 2008, he coached the Russian Krylia Sovetov Moscow PHK second division, first as an assistant coach, from October 2007 as head coach. In 2010 he returned to CSKA Moscow, where he was hired as an assistant coach. In May 2011 he was appointed head coach of Awtomobilist Yekaterinburg and released in late November of the same year.
