Krimpen aan den IJssel

Krimpen aan den IJssel ( listen? / I ) is a municipality of the Dutch province of South Holland and counted on 1 January 2013 as declared by the CBS 28 854 inhabitants. Their total area is 8.93 km ² and includes the large village of the same name and some small towns and villages.

Location and economic

Krimpen aan den IJssel is located about eight kilometers east of Rotterdam in the polder Krimpenerwaard, north of the community Nederlek. The village owes its name to its location at a " krimp " = curve at the Dutch Issel, at the mouth of this river arm in the arm of the Rhine Lek / Noord. A good road connects it to Rotterdam, where the nearest railway terminal.

The village is home to many commuters who work in Rotterdam and has been spreading for this purpose after about 1975. But Krimpen aan den IJssel itself has a lot of business, including Ship repair yards, construction companies, metal processing factories, trading companies, etc. The agriculture in the hinterland is still of importance.

History

Around 1130 came at a flow curve, the settlement Crempene, the 1277 in Krimpen aan den IJssel and Krimpen aan de Lek split. 1430, after the elimination of flood damage of 1421, Philip the Good, a still existing polder management ( " Hoogheemradschap " ) was launched. In the 16th century, people began to make the very appropriate to the riverbank clay bricks. Also Hemp was grown to about 1800: nowadays not like for drug use, but to create out of the fibers in Reeperbahnen rope for sailing ships. As the place even when storm surge of February 1, 1953 was not spared, a storm surge barrier was built in the Dutch IJssel as the first project of the Delta Works. This building was completed in 1958.

Attractions

Along the IJsseldeichs are some monumental farms. One of them, Crimpenerhof ( 17th and 18th century built ) is set up as a local history museum.
