Latrobe City is a Local Government Area ( LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria, the city has the same status. The area is 1420 km ² and has about 69,000 inhabitants.

Latrobe is located about 150 km east of the capital, Melbourne in the south east of Victoria and encompasses six major cities: Boolarra, Churchill, Yallourn North, Moe, Traralgon and Morwell. The seat of the City Council is located in Morwell in the center of Latrobe.

Latrobe City is located in the Latrobe Valley, the center of lignite mining and power generation in Victoria. The coal-fired power plants in Loy Yang, Hazelwood, Yallourn and Morwell are among the largest in Australia. Loy Yang alone covers one third of the power consumption of the state. However, a disadvantage of the lignite is the high CO2 emissions. The power station Hazelwood is, according to WWF, the power plant, in which the comparison of the power plants of all leading industrial nations, the largest share of CO2 accumulates. Hazelwood alone is responsible for about 5 % of the emissions of greenhouse gases from all over Australia.
