Māori All Blacks

New Zealand Māori is a New Zealand rugby union team that traditionally plays against teams that are in New Zealand for a visit. Abroad, the team participated until 2007 only the Churchill Cup to compete not with the national team ( the All Blacks ). This tournament was the New Zealand Māori now attracted twice (2004, 2006). Since 2008 no longer take the NZ Māori at the Churchill Cup in part, as they are the Junior All blacks in the Pacific Nations Cup replaced, which they then won immediately at the first appearance.

To be included in the team, a player must be māorischer descent to at least 1/ 16, ie at least one Ururgroßelternteil must have been a Māori proven. In the past, this rule was not always strictly applied, because it also players were added, which were not allowed to play for the national team because of apartheid regulations in South Africa.

History

1888/89 were the New Zealand Natives rugby team, the first from a British colony, the games fought out in the UK. Actually, the team should be composed only of Māori, but then also four Pākehā ( New Zealanders of European descent ) have been included in the squad. The composite team of 26 players completed the course of their tour 107 games; she won 78 times, lost 23 times and played 6 times draw.

The most significant contribution of the New Zealand Natives of New Zealand rugby culture was dancing a haka before the game starts. This traditional ritual dance of the Māori was first performed on October 3, 1888 prior to the game against a team from Surrey. Both the Haka and the black game clothing were later taken over by the All Blacks ( the national team played in the early years in navy blue).

1910 received the New Zealand Māori by the Association official status. The choice of the year 1926/27, is considered the best Māori team of all time. During a seven- month long tour of Australia, Europe and Canada, she played 38 times. The Māori were victorious in 29 games, lost seven times and played draw twice. George Nepia, who was considered one of the best players in the world, had to stay home because he had missed the ship in Wellington.

Between 1994 and 2004, the New Zealand Māori lost only four of their 26 games in total. They won among others against England, Argentina, Scotland and Fiji. In 2004, she also won for the first time the Churchill Cup in Canada.

In 2005, the New Zealand Māori were the first ones at all the British and Irish Lions in an official game. Because of the preparation for this game they had to forgo participation in the Churchill Cup. In 2006 she participated again and won the tournament for the second time.

In 2008, the team took part in the Pacific Nations Cup, replacing the Junior All Blacks. Undefeated is the end won the tournament with a victory in the crucial away match against Australia A, the reserve of the Australian national team.
