Mikhail Botvinov

Mikhail Botwinow (Russian: Михаил Ботвинов, English transcription: Mikhail Botvinov; born November 17, 1967 in Lidinka, Tula Oblast ), called " Boti ", is a former Russian and Austrian cross-country skier and Olympic athlete and was a member of the Austrian cross-country ski team.

Career

The native Russian began to season 1995/96 for his old homeland, before moving to disputes with the Association to Austria and also took Austrian citizenship. After a standing time in the season 1996/97, in the Botwinow held mainly in cross-country races fit, he was allowed to go in 1997 for the Austrian Ski Federation at international races at the start.

The time of the Austrian army soldier trained in the famous Olympic Training Center Obertauern where, inter alia, also the alpine skier Hermann Maier kept fit and also launched for the local ski club. Botwinow is in a relationship with an Austrian, has a son from his first marriage in Russia and a son from his current relationship. He lives with his girlfriend and his second son in Ramsau am Dachstein Styria.

His greatest success of the 1.85 meter Mikhail Botwinow already as Austrians. These are especially the gold medal in the relay with Christian Hoffmann, Alois Stadlober and Markus Gandler, as well as the bronze medal over 50 km classic at the home World Cup in Ramsau am Dachstein 1999. His career reached its peak Mikhail Botwinow 2002 by winning the silver medal over 30 km Skating at the Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City behind compatriot Christian Hoffmann. At the 2006 Olympics in Turin the then 38 -year-old missed the gold medal by only 0.9 seconds, and the silver medal in the sprint against Yevgeny Dementiev only a tenth of a second, but celebrated by winning the bronze medal over 50 km of skating a worthy farewell to Olympics.

In October 2006, he announced his retirement from competitive sport with the end of the 2006/07 season.

2012 Botwinow was sentenced on Leoben Regional Court to a four-month conditional prison sentence to a trial period of three years. He was accused of having lied in the course of the investigation against the former Austrian cross-country head coach Mayer.
