Obergailbach

Obergailbach is a commune of 320 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Moselle in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district of Sarreguemines and Canton Volmunster.

Geography and Geology

The name derives from the above the village springing Gailbach, called in the local dialect Gelbach.

The community is located ten kilometers east of Sarreguemines and only one kilometer from the German - French border. The north, down the valley lying Saarland village Niedergailbach, the next station of the Gailbachs before it flows into the assemblies, is two kilometers away.

The place is located in the upper valley between

  • Book Mountain ( Beech Bersch ) and the
  • Book Büsch ( Bischebisch ).

The name of the book and the book Büschs Mountain, located in the upper valley Obergailbach, bear witness to the naturally prevailing there main tree species beech. Today, the landscape is strongly influenced by grassland and fields, now often neglected orchards and small wood pieces. This diversity and the orchards lead to a large variety of species.

Geologically, the site is located in the so-called Obergailbach Sarreguemines - Zweibrücker Triassic trough. For the region particularly characteristic are the deposits of the Muschelkalk. Church

The place has the the 12th- century Romanesque church of Saint -Maurice. In 1902 the church was renovated under the direction of Paul Tornow.
