Schmittviller

Schmittviller (German Schmittweiler ) is a commune with 347 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Moselle in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district of Sarreguemines and Canton Rohrbach- lès -Bitche.

Geography

The village is situated in the southwestern part of the predominantly agricultural country Bitscher 46 km south of the German city of Saarbrücken. The place has a share in Northern Vosges Natural Park. Schmittviller has the smallest district of settlements from Bitscher country. The town is dominated by the high castle building.

History

Schmittviller was first mentioned in the 11th century as Smitwilre. At the end of the 17th century the settlement had shrunk to a Hofgut, the Duke Leopold gave his finance minister Jean -Frédéric de Dithmar fief. This was built from 1726 still existing castle and was thus the impetus that again developed a hamlet.

In the years 1790-1793 Schmittviller was assigned to the Canton Bouquenom. After Bouquenom went up in the new town of Sarre- Union and was Alsatian, the place came to Canton Rohrbach.

Between 1811-1837 Schmittviller was Annexe Rahling and then was again an independent municipality.

Demographics

In the mid-19th century falls a significant population increase, since then the population has stabilized at its current level.

Attractions

The castle from 1726 falls by its high brick roof in the eye, appears else today but rather as a sober non-residential buildings. The neo-Gothic church of 1866 is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
