Pujaut

Pujaut ( Occitan Puejaut ) is a commune with 4039 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Gard and the Languedoc -Roussillon region.

Geography

Pujaut located eight kilometers north of Avignon on the western Ufertal the Rhone. In the environment, the communities Villeneuve- lès -Avignon, Rochefort -du- Gard, Tavel and Roquemaure lie.

History

Among the first residents of the podium Altum mainly among hunters and fishermen. In 1882 it was discovered by the village pond corresponding device dating to the Bronze Age ( 2200 BC ). The higher elevations were covered with forest and offered little arable land. The houses were later of a castle surmounted, which was destroyed during the Albigensian crusade.

During the Wars of Religion Pujaut 1567 was taken by the Protestants, who three years later retreated again after they had invested a part of the village on fire. At that time the inhabitants populated the upper part of the village, the village was surrounded by a wall and a moat. Another important settlement center was the district of Canon around the Chapel Saint- Vérédème.
