Roman Catholicism in Nigeria

The Roman Catholic Church in Nigeria is part of the worldwide Roman Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope and curia in Rome.

History

First contacts with Christian priests are dated to the year 1470. 1543 by Pope Paul III. the Diocese of São Tomé and Príncipe founded. 1860 settled in Lagos, the monks and nuns of the Society of African Missions (SMA ) that from 1885 the Holy Ghost Fathers ( CSSP ).

In the settlement areas of the Igbo there is a high proportion Catholic. In the north of the country, the number of Muslims exceeds that of the Catholic Christians clearly.
