History

The name of the municipality dates back to the martyrs Quiricus or Saint Cyr, whose name was in the south of France often converted to Saint Cirgues. But the name of the village has changed the course of history several times. So the place was called in the 14th century Saint Cirgues près Merle, during the Revolution Cirgues d' Eyge and was until 1920 the present name Saint- Cirgues- la- Loutre. But where does the unusual name of locality ( to German: Saint- Cirgues- otter )? That tells a legend that is held in the church of the community: The architect of the church was disturbed every morning because his day's work was slumped over night in it. To summon his fate, he threw his hammer with the will, that the church would be built there where this falls down. When the hammer fell to the ground, he killed an otter in a fish pond. This legend is also symbolized in the municipal coat of arms.
