Treignac

Treignac is a commune with 1368 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Corrèze, in the Limousin region.

Geography

Treignac is 75 km southeast of Limoges in the Haut- Limousin on the banks of the Vézère in a semicircle of hills of the western Massif Central. The municipality is part of the Regional Natural Park Millevaches en Limousin.

History

In the field of Treignac was already in Gallo- Roman period a settlement of the still remain on the Champ de Monteil remains of grave sites.

Around the year 1000 called loop River Vézère was built on an almost totally inaccessible, rocky elevation in a castle in the peninsula (Peninsula). Already for the 11th century, where it occupies a Viguerie.

In 2000, here the canoe and kayak World Cup was hosted.

Population Development

Since the early 1960s, the population of Treignac is almost always decline. Cause of population decline is the significant negative birth rate, which could not be offset by the ongoing migration from other parts of France in the village. When counting of 1999, approximately 50 % of the population were 60 years old or older.

Culture and sights

As one of the most beautiful villages in France Treignac has a remarkable historic townscape. In the resort, among several, partly equipped with weir bays town houses from the 15th and 16th centuries, numerous other buildings are placed as a monument historique under special protection:

  • The covered market hall built in the 15th century.
  • The Town Hall and the former chapel Notre -Dame-de -la- Paix originated in the 17th century, in which the College was founded, a former private school, leading up to the entrance and facade stair towers.
  • The old bridge over the Vézère built in the 13th century.
  • The church was built in the 15th century, the old Büßerkapelle in the 17th century.

Museums

The Musée des Arts et traditions populaires de la Haute et Moyenne Vézère maintains an ethnographic collection.

Partnerships

Since 1996, the city combines a partnership with Neuendettelsau in Bavaria.
