History

The parish of Saint- Ybard was mentioned under this name for the first time in 987 in the cartulary of Uzerche documented. The name comes from the holy Eparchius, or also called Cybar back.

However, the colonization history of this region is older. A leading past this highway was the Bronze and Iron Ages, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea and a ridge trail that connected the Haut- Limousin with the Bassin de Brive and was used until the 19th century.

From the 10th to the 12th century Saint- Ybard belonged to the viscounts of Limoges and the Barony de Bret. From the 13th century until the 18th century the town was under the rule of the family of Pérusse of Cars but also among the religious interests of the Abbey of Uzerche. In the 17th and 18th centuries the town was richer than to be the neighboring communities in the call. In addition, the family Pérusse had built some steel mills and even a paper mill here.

In the times of the French Revolution there were in addition to the destruction of the castle of Garaboeuf no negative impact on the community. So then reached in 1846 the place its largest population with 1636 inhabitants. But two world wars and the rural exodus in the 20th century ensured a permanent reduction of the population of Saint- Ybard.
