Sankt Englmar is a municipality in the Lower Bavarian district of Straubing-Bogen. The state-approved climatic health resort is also a popular winter sports resort.

History

The name of the place goes according to tradition, back to the hermit Engelmarus who erected born 1060 in Lüftlhof at Passau and after training with the bishop a hermitage up the Danube. He was very popular among the population and was estimated as a healer of animals. Probably because of his popularity he was slain in the winter of 1100 from his envy him end " companions " and buried in the snow. Only at Pentecost was a priest named " Ruodbertus " the dead who 've always looked bright and fresh. He had him down to the valley and bury. Over his grave site was a 1131 " stone church " built. Only later the valley was settled and the " Sankt Englmar " was born.

1188 Engelmarus was beatified, and after the establishment of a parish in 1296 is Sankt Englmar developed place of pilgrimage. To date, the custom of Englmari - seeking is maintained on Whit Monday.

Englmar belonged to Rentamt Straubing and the district court Mitterfels of the Electorate of Bavaria. In the course of administrative reform in Bavaria, was born with the congregation of 1818, the current community. On 1 June 1959, the community received its present name Sankt Englmar.

In the 1970s they built a city from the winter sport center. In November 1973, a 440 apartments with 1150 beds comprehensive holiday park was opened with numerous hotels, shopping malls and sports facilities in more than 900 meters above sea level to 52,000 m², which was given the name " Schachterldorf " by the locals. 1980 offered the community a capacity of 3123 beds and counted 486 949 overnight stays.

Culture and sights

  • The 1656 built on the walls of the late Gothic choir of a previous building burnt parish church of St. Engelmar received its present tower in 1892, the nave was enlarged in 1901.   • The Chapel of St. Leonhard on the southwestern outskirts of the village is a Late Gothic building consecrated in 1480 and thus the oldest building in the village.   • The Englmarisuchen takes place on Whit Monday. This is the body represented by a wooden statue of St.. Englmar sought.
  • Opened on 30 April 2008 Waldwipfelweg Sankt Englmar - Maibrunn is 370 m long and leads with multiple viewing platforms in up to 30 m height through the canopy.

Others

On the southwest edge of the deer steins at Rettenbachferner BMW intended to use a 5.22 hectare area for off-road driving training, which was specially carved out of the landscape protection area for this. While environmental groups like the covenant nature raised concerns - including a large part of the area should be sealed -, hoped the proponents of a positive effect on the economic development of the region. The environmentalists prevailed.
