History

Aiterhofen has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, as the discovery of the largest Linear Pottery cemetery in Germany shows (about 260 graves ) in Aiterhofen / Ödmühle.

773 AD Aiterhofen was mentioned as Villa Eitraha for the first time as agilolfingischer Herzogshof documented. About the 973 comes another mention as Eitarahoue, so courtyard at the Eiterach. A chronicler of the 11th century the name falsely interpreted as a court of the poison ( = pus ). But the actual meaning is derived from the Indo- oid for swell and the Old High German aha terms for water and yard for property from. So the place name means something like " properties on swelling watercourse ," which the reference is made to the river Aiterach.

Probably in the first quarter of the 13th century, the Romanesque parish church of St Margaret was built. It also houses the oldest bell of Lower Bavaria ( 1325 ). Of the original two towers planned, only the north tower was built. In 1883 removed to the Rococo furnishings from the 18th century. The adjacent cemetery chapel probably dates from the 17th century.

1846 Angela founded Fraundorfer the Convent of the Franciscan Sisters of Aiterhofen who, inter alia, the education of girls to the target and run a nursery school and a girls' secondary school and other facilities today.

Aiterhofen belonged to the accounts office and court Straubing of the Electorate of Bavaria. In the course of administrative reform in Bavaria, was born with the congregation of 1818, the current community.

Incorporations

On 1 May 1978, the formerly independent communities Geltolfing and Niederhart Hausen and the main part of the dissolved municipality Amselfing were incorporated.

Culture and sights

  • St. Margaret in Aiterhofen was probably built in the first quarter of the 13th century. The interior of the Romanesque church of the Baroque style in the 18th century and designed in the 19th century in the Art Nouveau style.
  • St. Peter and Paul in Geltolfing. The present building was begun in 1715 by Jakob Ruesch, but a church in Geltolfing was already mentioned in documents in 1126.
  • St. John in Niederhart Hausen was built in the early Gothic style. However, today of the original substance, only the chorus is obtained with ribbed vaults.

Economy, agriculture and forestry

There were 1998 in the field of Agriculture and Forestry 31, 133 in manufacturing and in trade and transport 62 persons work at the workplace.
