Sanremo Music Festival

Il Festival della canzone italiana is called the great music competition in the Ligurian town of Sanremo.

The festival is held annually, usually in late February or early March. It is currently aired five nights from Tuesday to Saturday.

Voting is usually done by a panel of expert judges and a popular jury, which is spread over the whole country and in every evening new people of different ages sit.

History

Since 1951 the festival will take place (Festival di Sanremo 1951). It is the oldest music festival in Europe, older than the Euro Vision Song Contest (since 1956).

State television RAI transmits the festival for years on television. The first editions were broadcast on the radio.

The festival was one of the reasons for the almost complete abandonment of Italy to participate in the Euro Vision Song Contest since the mid- 1990s. Because of the great national importance of the Sanremo Festival, the interest in European competition was relatively low. Since 2011 Italy takes part again at the Euro Vision Song Contest; the winner of the Sanremo Festival 2011 in the category Newcomer, Raphael Gualazzi, was selected as a participant.

It occurs not only famous singers but also give new talent and international stars, while not participating in the competition, but the event a great reputation.

The festival was rarely visited by rock artists or cantautori. 1967 Singer-songwriter Luigi Tenco took his own life after he was eliminated in the semifinals of the festival. Musicians as Fabrizio de André and Francesco Guccini have denied the mainstream of the event ever since.
