Sarntal

Sarn Valley (Italian: Sarnthein ) is a through by the Talfer municipality with 6951 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) north of Bolzano in South Tyrol (Italy). It occupies a large part of the mountain valley of the same name. Sarn Valley is the geographically largest community in South Tyrol and consists of a total of 28 districts, called fractions. Capital is Sarnthein.

It is known the Sarn Valley for the handicrafts of the quill embroidery.

Geography

There are two main access roads in the Sarn Valley: The Südzubringer leads from the Bolzano basin by the Sarner gorge. 1494 was a " Gemain farweg and strazzen in the valley Sérnntein on the Adige " commissioned and executed by the bailiff Sarntheiner Blasius Anich of King Maximilian I.. This often moved between Castle Street in 1936 Ried and Moarhäusl with an orographic right side tunnel road replaced (SS 508 ), which was traced out in high cliffs location for a dam project, however, not realized. This route is bypassed since the 1980s by spacious bypass tunnel rapidly. The traffic even North development, however, is from Sterzing about the Penser yoke and the Pensertal, the upper reaches of Talfer. This pass is closed in winter but usually four to five months. Nevertheless, this approach has often proved its importance, it remained but in the past the only still navigable access to the valley as soon as the state road was closed due to rock fall and for the Penser yoke still existed the winter closure.

Thanks to some major projects, Sarntaler state road became more and more through the tunnel and the remaining vulnerable sections covered by rock protection works. Thus, locks have now become rare.

The highest point of the municipality is the Hirzer ( 2781 m slm ).

Economy and infrastructure

The Sarn Valley is heavily influenced rural. The livestock industry, in large part on mountain farms, often under very difficult geographical conditions prevails. Often farmers have, in addition to the traditional South Tyrolean Grey cattle ( a breed of cattle ) and horses of the traditional South Tyrolean Haflinger breed. Many small farmers operate the farm only as a sideline and go during the day another job after.

Crafts are another economic pillar of Sarntales.

In the artisan area of the main town Sarnthein a district heating plant was built a few years ago, which is run by the local farmers and some consumers as a cooperative. Here not usable wood is burned out of the valley in an efficient way exclusively for the wood industry. In the fraction Reinwald is a ski resort that has been modernized in recent years and slightly extended.

The Sarner dialect is determined by the relative seclusion little affected still very traditional ( compared to other villages in South Tyrol ) and the Italian.

Traditions

The Sarn Valley is a very traditional place. The Sarn are one of the few communities that still often dress themselves in their costume. There are many crafts in the Sarn Valley: the quill embroidery, woodcarving, producing the popular " Sarnar Toppar " ( warm slippers ), as well as the further processing of loden. Even products Sarner mountain pine are popular.

Regular events

The Sarner Alpine Advent takes place every weekend in Advent. There are the producers Sarner their goods before or you can enjoy a hot cup of mulled wine with contemplative music and campfires. Also, a fairy tale Search Action for Children is organized. The Klöckeln is celebrated on every Thursday evening in the so-called Advent Klöckelnächten. The Sarn men and boys drive in an old worn-out garb and under a homemade mask ( Lorf ) from natural products such as Treebeard in groups ( Kut, pl: Kutn ) to mischief, to drive away evil spirits and Jesus ' way at Christmas to prepare.

At fixed dates include the traditional farmers' market ( Saturdays in summer) and the Sarner Parish (first weekend in September).
