Biography

Childhood

Sertab was a slip of a girl in her childhood. She became ill with 11 years of colitis, and had to be hospitalized several times. To distract from her illness, her mother, Sertab tried to inspire for playing the piano. She was taught and developed a passion for music.

Youth

Sertab began her vocal training at the high school in the choir of Işık Lisesi and carried them off at the State Conservatory of Istanbul ( İstanbul Belediye Konservatuvarı ). With her ​​powerful voice she was trained in six years for soprano.

Career

After training Sertab appeared in the most prestigious clubs of İstanbul and convinced gradually the audience. In the late 1980s Sezen Aksu noticed her and accompanied her career since then. Through joint appearances Sertab reached more notoriety in 1992 and published her first album Sakin Ol The compositions and lyrics for most of the songs on the album came from the pen of Aksu. Together they sold 950,000 copies of Sakin Ol Fahir Atakoglu composed for Sertabs next album Lâ'l (1994). Lâ'l as the following album Sertab Gibi (1996 ) has sold a total of about 1.5 million times.

In the meantime just in the camp of pop music represented Sertab pushed a an appearance with José Carreras, who confirmed her classical singing skills. After their most successful fourth album Sertab (1999) she performed with Ricky Martin and released the single Aşk together with the Greek singer Mando.

On 24 May 2003 Sertab won with 167 points for the 48th Euro Vision Song Contest in Riga for Turkey and thus achieved European fame. Her winning song " Everyway That I Can " ( Turkish Version: Sen üzülme diye ) became a European hit. In Greece, Sweden, Turkey and the Eastern European countries, the song occupied for weeks number 1 in Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria and Spain, the song became a top 10 hit and in Germany and Switzerland, it came under the first 20 places of the sales charts. The song managed to climb to # 17 Airplay World Official Top 100 and became one of the most commercially successful winner of the Euro Vision Song Contest songs in the 21st century. Encouraged by the international success published Sertab 2004, the English-language album No Boundaries, but that flopped.

In 2005, she contributed to the soundtrack for the documentary Crossing the Bridge - The Sound of Istanbul by Fatih Akın with a cover version of Madonna's Music. On December 6, published in 2008, Sertab her 15 years on the stage her first concert DVD called " Otobiyografi Istanbul Konseri ".
