Sestino

Sestino is a municipality with 1428 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Arezzo, in Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality covers 80 km ². It is located about 75 km northeast of Arezzo and 110 km east of Florence and is the easternmost municipality of the province of Arezzo and Tuscany. The municipality is situated on the rivers Foglia and Marecchia.

The districts include Calbuffa, Casale, Case Barboni, Colcellalto, Lucemburgo, Martigliano, Monte Romano, Monterone, Motolano, palaces, Ponte Presale, Petrella Massana, Presciano, San Donato, Valdiceci di Sopra and Ville di Sopra.

The neighboring municipalities are Badia, Belforte all'Isauro (PU), Borgo Pace ( PU), Carpegna (PU), Casteldelci ( RN ), Mercatello sul Metauro (PU), Pennabilli ( RN) and Piandimeleto (PU).

History

The ancient history of the place was used by the Etruscans, the Picenern, the Umbrians, the senones and the Romans. In the 1st century BC, the Romans began to build a town with town hall forum, curia, and thermal baths, since the place was so low in the Apennines, that the landscapes of the Marche, Tuscany and Romagna were easy to reach. 1566 Cosimo I de ' Medici started to build a fortress on the rock Sasso di Simone, to protect the Duchy of Tuscany before the interests of the Counts of Urbino. There is still the border with the province of Pesaro and Urbino.

Traditions

Each year on the last weekend in June finds in Sestino in honor of the Chianina breed of cattle instead of the hard Sagra della Bistecca Chianina.

Attractions

  • Chiesa di San Gianni Vecchio, the church in the district of San Gianni, which was already documented in 1297.
