Songwriters Hall of Fame

The Songwriters Hall of Fame is an organization in honor deserving composers and lyricists of popular music in the U.S., based in New York City.

Background and Objectives

The Songwriters Hall of Fame was founded in 1969 by songwriter Johnny Mercer and music publishers Abe Olman and the Howie Richmond from life to honor outstanding composers and lyricists of popular music and to preserve their work and their bequest to future generations and develop.

To this end, the organization biographies and work lists together its members and systematically collects their estates with the aim to make these materials even in a museum and archive building accessible to the public. Funding for the project is solely based on donations; so far (June 2008 ) is such a building yet, while the official website of the organization is to act as a virtual museum for the time being.

In founding president Mercer in 1973 they Sammy Cahn, who called for support of the project, the National Academy of Popular Music in life. After Cahn's death was from 1993 to 1998 Frank Sinatra as "Chairman Emeritus " of the organization before. Today the organization is managed by an eight- member board and a 22köpfigen Board of Directors. CEO of the Songwriters Hall of Fame is currently Hal David, President Linda Moran.

Annual Awards

The Songwriters Hall of Fame awards in cooperation with the National Academy of Popular Music annually several different awards, of which the election of new members into the Hall of Fame is the most important. The other prices are partly also awarded to non-members. The winners will be announced in February of the current year; The ceremony takes place in June at a gala event in New York.

Songwriters Hall of Fame Membership From 1969 to 2008 351 individual songwriters were taken. 2003, the British band Queen was accepted as so far the only group collectively into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Johnny Mercer Award This award is only awarded to artists who have already been previously included in the Hall of Fame, but also have a whole created a work of particular grade in the tradition of Johnny Mercer.

Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award This prize is awarded to artists for their lifetime.

Abe Olman Publisher Award This award is given to music producers who have cared for particularly outstanding pieces of music in their function.

Hal David Starlight Award This prize is awarded to young artists who have rendered outstanding services to the already popular music.

Howie Richmond Hitmaker Award This prize is awarded for singers or personalities from the music industry who were responsible for particularly successful hits over a longer period of time.

Towering Song Award This award is given to the authors of a song that has generally shaped musical history over a longer period of time and influenced the musical culture in the United States.
