Stockem, Germany

Stockem is a municipality in the district of Bitburg -Prüm, in Rhineland -Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Bitburg -Land.

Geography

The community is located about ten kilometers southwest of the county town of Bitburg on the plateau between Prüm and Enz The border with Luxembourg runs 11 km southwest of the village. The Federal Highway 50 - about 5 kilometers north of Stockem, leading inter alia to Bitburg and Luxembourg. Of the 3.97 km ² large municipality, 66% is agricultural land, a smaller proportion of 27% is composed of forests.

History

The first documentary mention as " Stochheim " comes from the year 1132., The former ending in " - home " points to a birth of the village at the time of the Frankish conquest.

The place belonged to the late 18th century the Duchy of Luxembourg and was divided into the dominions Bettingen and New Castle. In 1794, French revolutionary troops had the Austrian Netherlands, which included the Duchy of Luxembourg, occupied and annexed in October 1795. From 1795 to 1814 Stockem belonged to Canton New Castle in the department of forests. After the takeover of the region by the Kingdom of Prussia (1815 ) was Baustert administrative seat of the mayor's office in the district of Bitburg, which went up in the mayor's Baustert 1856, which was later incorporated into the Office Oberweis.

Attractions

The " former parish church of St. Hubertus " is a two-aisled building in late Gothic style from the period around 1500. Cultural monuments includes, inter alia, an early gothic east tower from 1220 and a wooden carved altar from the 18th century.
