Timeline of space travel by nationality

Overview on the first spaceman a country

Since the first space flight, which was conducted by the Soviet Union, astronauts have flown out of 38 states in the space. For each nation, each mission is listed first. The list refers to the nationality at the time of spaceflight.

The first years flew exclusively Soviet and American astronauts into space. Only 17 years after Gagarin's first flight flew a spaceman with a third nation in space. In the following years were to fly under the Intercosmos program, more and more cosmonauts from Eastern Europe with Soviet spaceships.

Country statistics on the number of astronauts and total time in space

This table shows the number of astronauts who launched into space each country, and their total duration. It counts all space travelers who have at least completed a mission in orbit.

The difference between the U.S. and the former Soviet Union is due to the technologies used in each case. While having a space shuttle up to eight astronauts can fly to short inserts into space, they have there with the Russian Soyuz spacecraft at most three. The Soviet and now Russian space program has been designed since the 1970s to operate space stations in orbit for a long time and uses their spaceships to feeder services. In contrast, the American space used space shuttles to operate at relatively short missions on board or suspend research payloads.

The table above shows Americans are counted with dual citizenship ( Ansari, Foale, Richard Garriott, Scully -Power, Thomas ) to the United States, which is why Australia and Iran are not listed.

Remek and Jähn were at the time of her spaceflight citizens of Czechoslovakia and the GDR.
