Mission overview

The Soyuz spacecraft launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome by a Soyuz rocket 11A511U. The commander Afanasyev was the only Russian astronauts on board, since two of the three seats were rented out to other nations (France and Slovakia). This meant that the on-board the Mir flight engineer Sergei Avdeev had to do twice as long stay. After the return of the commander of the crew of EO -26, Gennady Padalka, and Slovak cosmonaut Ivan Bella with Soyuz TM- 28 was the new Mir EO -27 crew of Viktor Afanasyev, Sergey Avdeev and Frenchman Jean -Pierre Haigneré.

As Soyuz TM- 29 on August 28, 1999, landed a nearly ten-year era of space travel came to an end in who had always stopped at least a spaceship crew in orbit since September 5, 1989.

Avdeev had spent 379 days in space. Only the stay of Valeri Polyakov at 437 days aboard Mir in the years 1994/95 had been longer. Together with his two other space flights, it brought Avdeev but in a time of 747 days in space. This record was broken by Sergei Krikaljow until 2005.
