Kosmos 656

Cosmos 656 is the codename for an unmanned flight of the Soviet Soyuz spacecraft. The mission served as a test for the new Soyuz 7K- T variant, which was designed as a transport ferry crews for the military Almaz space station.

Flight

The launch of the spacecraft took place on May 27, 1974 07:26 UTC clock from Soviet Baikonur cosmodrome. The Soyuz rocket brought Kosmos 656 into a 364 km high orbit, where, equipped with a new automatic docking spacecraft completed a two-day test flight. The first manned use of the modified Soyuz version took place one month later as part of a mission to the space station Salyut 3
