William Michael Crose

William Michael Crose ( born February 8, 1867 in Greencastle, Indiana, † April 4, 1929 in San Diego, California ) was an American naval officer. Between 1910 and 1913 he was military governor of American Samoa.

Career

In 1888, William Crose graduated from the United States Military Academy in Annapolis (Maryland). He then began a career as an officer in the U.S. Navy, where he served on various warships, including the USS Wheeling and the USS Kentucky. At the end of his career he reached the rank of captain.

Between 10 November 1910 and the March 14, 1913 Crose was the successor of John Frederick Parker Governor of American Samoa. There he called a training committee to life. He also occupied the post of Marine clergy and a naval doctor. He successfully lobbied for the renaming of Tutuila - as his territory was then called officially - in American Samoa. This request was granted. He was the first governor of the territory, which was allowed to officially call them " Governor of American Samoa " also. The predecessors were, even if they are led today spoke available under the name American Samoa Governors of Tutuila.

During the First World War William Crose served as captain of the battleship USS North Dakota. For his military services he was awarded the Navy Cross. He died on April 4, 1929 in San Diego.
