Bargème

Bargème is a southern French village with 167 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

From the association Les Plus Beaux Villages de France the mountain village was included in the list of the most beautiful villages in France.

Geography

Bargème situated 36 km north of Draguignan, 9 km north of Comps- sur -Artuby and 30 km south of Castellane on a rocky hill. With an average altitude of 1,097 m and has a maximum elevation of 1,589 m Bargème is the highest village of the Var. The municipality is part of the Regional Natural Park of Verdon.

History

Archaeological findings have settlements from the Iron Age, come from the tombs and jewelry, to go to the Gallo - Roman era.

In the year 814, the city first appears in records as Bergemulu, later, in the year 1026 as Bargema. From the 14th to the 18th century the place was under the rule of the families and d' Agoult Pontevès. During the Wars of Religion, many members of these families were murdered and destroyed their seat of power.

Attractions

The site is dominated by the ruins of the feudal castle Pontevès from the 13th century to the still grouped numerous other buildings of high medieval period.

Economy

Apart from tourism, agriculture is the most important economic factor. In Bargème grain, lavender, various fruits and fodder are grown. In addition, cattle breeding, producing cheese and managed forest.
