Basse-Ham

Basse -Ham ( German Niederham, 1940-44 Lower Hamm ) is a commune with 2326 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Moselle in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district of Thionville -Est and Canton Metzervisse.

Geography

Basse -Ham is located about seven kilometers northeast of Thionville in the Moselle at an altitude 149-249 m above sea level. In the 10.05 km ² of the municipality the Bibiche flows into the Moselle. Not far from the opposite bank of the Moselle is the Cattenom nuclear power station.

To Basse -Ham include the districts Haute -Ham ( Oberham ) in the west and Saint -Louis in the south of the church.

History

Basse -Ham, which belonged to the long -Duchy of Luxembourg, came after the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659 to France. From 1871 to 1918 Basse -Ham belonged under the name Niederham as part of the Empire State Alsace-Lorraine to the German Empire. Between 1940 and 1945, the Municipality of troops of the German Reich was busy. During this time the place was known as Lower Hamm.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint- Willibrord, which is also shown in the coat of arms, was built in the 18th century but destroyed in 1891 and later rebuilt in 1893 according to the plans Conrad madness again. During World War II (1939-1945), the building was heavily damaged by bombing in November 1944. From 1947 to 1952 restoration work was carried out.

The Chapel of Notre -Dame was built in the 18th century. 1765 restoration work was carried out. In the chapel are several sculptures from the 18th century. A crucifix disappeared 1975-1984 from the chapel. A Pietà and two statues, one of which is an Anthony of Padua, the other Joseph of Nazareth, are preserved, but are in poor condition. Another statue depicting Saint Clare of Assisi. Before the chapel stands an ornate shrine, which was built in 1614.

The Chapel of Saint -Marc in the district of Haute -Ham was built in 1956 to replace an old chapel from the 12th century, which was destroyed in 1955.
