Metzervisse

Metzervisse ( German Erwiese Metz, Metz 1940-44 Proven, Lorraine Metzerwis ) is a commune with 1888 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Moselle in the Lorraine region. It is the capital of the eponymous canton Metzervisse.

Geography

The community Metzervisse lies in the valley of the river Bibiche, about ten kilometers south-east of Thionville, on the road to Bouzonville and Saarlouis.

History

The place was first mentioned in the 10th century as Wiehs and belonged until 1659 to the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation, then conquered and annexed by France. In 1871 the town was recaptured and came to the new German (Kaiser ) Empire ( Empire country Alsace-Lorraine ). After the First World War affiliated France, his German village name was Frenchified and officially renamed Metzerwisse. From 1 February 1971 to 31 December 1981 the neighboring Volstroff was incorporated.
