Chaux (Territoire de Belfort)

Chaux ( formerly German Cha ) is a town in the French department of Territoire de Belfort in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Chaux is located at 428 m above sea level, about nine kilometers north of the town of Belfort ( a straight line ). The former road line village stretches in the foothills of the Vosges, in the Basin of Giromagny, which extends between the Vosges mountains, the hills of the Forêt de Roppe and the Montagne de Salbert, in the plain west of the river the Savoureuse. It is located in the Regional Natural Park of Ballons des Vosges.

The area of ​​9.26 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the area of ​​the Vosges foothills. The main part of the territory occupied by the level of the pelvis Giromagny, which is on average 420 m. It is mainly passed with arable and meadow land, but also shows some larger forest areas. From north to south the plain is crossed by the Savoureuse. To the west of the municipality of the ground to the flood plain of the Rhome enough east to the Rosemontoise, both tributaries of the Savoureuse. Between the rivers of Savoureuse and Rosemontoise the Grove Forêt de Vaivre expands. Along the rivers and in hollows there are numerous ponds that were once created for fish farming. To the west, the municipality's area extends to the wooded heights of the Tête de Chaux, at 530 m the highest elevation of Chaux is achieved.

Neighboring communities of Chaux are Auxelles -Bas, Giromagny and Rougegoutte in the north, Grosmagny and Éloie in the east, the south and Sermamagny Lachapelle- sous- Chaux in the West.

History

Is first mentioned Chaux in 1252 under the name of Chas. At that time it was the center of a large parish. First, standing in the sphere of influence of the Counts of Montbéliard, Chaux always belonged to the reign Rosemont. Middle of the 14th century came the village under the suzerainty of the Habsburg dynasty. Together with the Sundgau Chaux came with the 1648 Peace of Westphalia to the French crown. Since 1793, the village belonged to the Department of Haut -Rhin, however, remained in 1871 as part of the Territoire de Belfort as opposed to the rest of Alsace in France. Today Chaux is a member of the comprehensive eight municipalities municipal association Communauté de communes la Haute Savoureuse.

Attractions

The church of Saint -Martin, which originally dates back to a high medieval building was rebuilt in 1770; the foundations of the tower probably date from the 11th century.

Population

With 1087 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Chaux is one of the smaller communities of the department of Territoire de Belfort. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (1911 814 persons were still counted ), a significant population increase has been recorded since the early 1970s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Chaux was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ), fish farming and forestry embossed village. Today, there are some operations of small and medium industries, including the construction and transportation, and in precision engineering. Meanwhile, the village has also changed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in the larger towns in the area and in the agglomeration Belfort.

The village has good transport links. It lies on the secondary road D465 which leads from Belfort to Giromagny. The nearest links to the A36 motorway is located at a distance of about ten kilometers. Further road links exist with Lachapelle- sous- Chaux, Rougegoutte and Éloie. With the city of Belfort Chaux is connected by a bus. Southwest of the village is the airfield Belfort- Chaux, which today is used in particular for the sport of soaring.
