Froidefontaine

Froidefontaine ( formerly German Kaltbrunn ) is a town in the French department of Territoire de Belfort in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Froidefontaine is located on 335 m above sea level, about ten kilometers southeast of the town of Belfort ( a straight line ). The village is located in the lowlands of the Burgundian Gate, on the southern edge of the wide valley of the Bourbeuse, opposite Charmois, between the plateau of Les Grands Bois in the northwest and Bois Lachat in the southeast.

The area of ​​4.55 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the weakly in relief landscape in the Burgundian Gate ( trouée de Belfort ). The northern boundary runs mostly along the Bourbeuse, with the meanders meanders through a wide valley and provides drainage to Allaine. In the more than a kilometer wide valley is also the waterways of the Rhine-Rhone canal, the height difference overcomes at Froidefontaine with a lock. From the Bourbeuse, the municipality's area extends to the southeast on the flood plain and a gently rising slope, which is subdivided by several short tributaries, except for the adjacent plateau. This averages to 375 m and is covered with arable and meadow land. On the south and southeast is the woodland Bois Lachat, in the 388 m, the highest elevation is achieved by Froidefontaine. In hollows and valleys, there are several ponds that were created for fish farming.

Neighboring communities of Froidefontaine are Charmois, Autrechêne and Brebotte in the north, and Recouvrance Grosne in the east, Grandvillars and Morvillars in the south and Bourogne in the West.

History

The first mention in writing Froidefontaine in the year 1105, as Ermentrude, the widow of Count Thierry I of Montbéliard Ferrette, Cluny Abbey lands to the Bourbeuse left, so that these reasons a priory here. The Priory of Froidefontaine soon developed into an important spiritual center of the region. Middle of the 14th century came Froidefontaine under the suzerainty of the Habsburg dynasty. 1621 came into the possession of the Priory of the Jesuits of Ensisheim. It was destroyed in 1632 during the Thirty Years' War, but subsequently rebuilt. Together with the Sundgau Froidefontaine came with the 1648 Peace of Westphalia to the French crown. The priory came in 1756 in the possession of the Royal College in Colmar and was secularized during the French Revolution, the building passed into state ownership. Since 1793 Fontainefroide belonged to the Department of Haut -Rhin, however, remained in 1871 as part of the Territoire de Belfort as opposed to the rest of Alsace in France.

Attractions

The church of Saint -Pierre is originally on the Romanesque Priory Church of the early 12th century, back (part of the apse of this period are preserved), but has been remodeled several times over the years, most recently in the 18th century to a greater extent. A former Prioratsgebäude now houses the rectory. In the cemetery there is a gothic cross.

Population

With 467 inhabitants (1 January 2011 ) is Froidefontaine to the small communities of the department of Territoire de Belfort. Once the population has consistently had in the first half of the 20th century in the area of ​​330-390 people, since a slight population growth was recorded.

Economy and infrastructure

Froidefontaine was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ), fish farming and forestry embossed village. In addition, there are now a number of companies of small and medium industries, including a chemical factory and a mechanical workshop. The former major brickworks on the outskirts was closed. Meanwhile, the village has also changed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in the larger neighboring villages and in urban Belfort and Montbéliard.

The village has good transport links. It is located near the main road N19, which runs from Belfort to dent. The nearest links to the A36 motorway is located at a distance of about nine miles. Further road links exist with Brebotte, Charmois and Grandvillars.
