Sermamagny

Sermamagny is a town in the French department of Territoire de Belfort in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Sermamagny is located on 401 m, about six kilometers north of the town of Belfort ( a straight line ). The village is located in the foothills of the Vosges, in the Basin of Giromagny, which extends between the Vosges Mountains, the hills of the Forêt de Roppe and the Montagne de Salbert, in the plain on both sides of the river the Savoureuse.

The area of ​​7.90 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the area of ​​the Vosges foothills. The entire area occupied by the level of the pelvis Giromagny lying on an average of 400 m. It is mainly passed with arable and meadow land, but also shows some of larger forest areas. From north to south the plain is crossed by the Savoureuse, the southwest of the village from the right receives the Rhome. To the east of the church on the ground level in the Grove Forêt de Vaivre, and to the Rosemontoise, a further influx of Savoureuse enough. Along the rivers and in hollows there are numerous ponds that were once created for fish farming. The most important are the Etang de la Veronne and the Etang de Malsaucy that are now recognized as lakes and recreational area of Belfort. On a hill north of the Etang de la Veronne the highest elevation of Sermamagny is achieved with 423 m.

Neighboring communities of Sermamagny are Lachapelle- sous- Chaux Chaux in the north, Éloie in the east, the south and Valdoie Évette - Salbert in the West.

History

Is first mentioned Sermamagny in 1347 under the name Sermegin. Over time, the term on Surmaimaingny ( 1423 ), Samermenigny ( 1427), Sermemesgny ( 1458 ), Sermamegny (1563 ), Schirmamenga ( 1572) and Sermangny changed ( 1717) to the present name. The etymology of the name is as Sigimar ( Germanic personal name ) and interpreted mansio (Latin for apartment, hostel), which means about Sermamagny House of Sigimar.

First, standing in the sphere of influence of the Counts of Montbéliard, the village has always been one to rule Rosemont. Mid-14th century it came under the suzerainty of the Habsburg dynasty. Between 1360 and 1375 Sermamagny was devastated by mercenaries under Arnaud de Cervole and Enguerrand VII de Coucy. Also during the Thirty Years' War, it was sacked by Swedish troops in 1633. Together with the Sundgau Sermamagny came with the 1648 Peace of Westphalia to the French crown. Since 1793, the village belonged to the Department of Haut -Rhin, however, remained in 1871 as part of the Territoire de Belfort as opposed to the rest of Alsace in France. Since 1998 Sermamagny is a member of the Association of Municipalities Communauté d' Agglomà Belfortaine.

The Maison Bardy, which was built in the 19th century by a wealthy family and has two towers, is now used as a chapel and cultural center. Among the natural attractions and recreational areas, the region around the Etang de Thau Malsaucy and the la Veronne.

Population

With 810 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Sermamagny one of the small communities of the department of Territoire de Belfort. Once the population has consistently had in the first half of the 20th century in the area of ​​480-550 people, to 1975 a significant population growth was recorded. Since then, the population remained at a relatively constant level.

Economy and infrastructure

Sermamagny was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ), fish farming and forestry embossed village. Today, there are some operations of small and medium industries, including a company in the chemical industry. Meanwhile, the village has also changed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in the larger towns in the area and in the agglomeration Belfort.

The village has good transport links. It lies on the secondary road D465 which leads from Belfort to Giromagny. The nearest links to the A36 motorway is located at a distance of about eight kilometers. Further road links exist with Lachapelle- sous- Chaux, Évette - Salbert and Éloie. With the city of Belfort Sermamagny is connected by a bus.

Events

Located on a peninsula at the Lac de Malsaucy takes place every year in July, one of the largest rock music festivals held in France, Les Eurockéennes de Belfort.
