Bavilliers

Bavilliers is a town in the French department of Territoire de Belfort in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Bavilliers is located on 355 m above the sea, about three kilometers southwest of the town of Belfort ( a straight line ). The second largest agglomeration community of Belfort extends in the hills west of Belfort, on either side of Douce, which also occurs here in a broad valley, on the eastern edge of the ridge of the Côte.

The area of ​​4.80 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the gently undulating landscape in the western part of the Burgundian Gate ( trouée de Belfort ). The southern part of the area occupied by the valley of the Douce, which is an average of 350 meters and has a width of approximately one kilometer. In this valley the Douce enters from the northwest, where it flows through a limestone plateau is countersunk into the valley. In this valley, a part of the water seeps in Trou de la lady to occur after about 150 m running track in the village again evident. History

The territory of Bavilliers was settled very early. During excavations a mosaic and numerous brick fragments were discovered from Gallo-Roman times. Is first mentioned Bavilliers in 1140 under the name Basvyllis. The name came originally from the Latin ( Bassis Villis ) and means about as much as lower, deeper situated village / homestead. First, standing in the sphere of influence of the Lords of Montbeliard, came Bavilliers mid-14th century under the suzerainty of the Habsburg and belonged to the rule Belfort. Together with the Sundgau came the village with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 to the French crown. Attractions

The church of Saint -Ambroise was built from 1846 to 1850, replacing the late medieval church on the present cemetery grounds. From the former seat of power are only a few remnants still visible. With 4889 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Bavilliers one of the largest municipalities in the department of Territoire de Belfort.
