Chavanatte

Chavanatte ( formerly Kleinschaffnatt German ) is a town in the French department of Territoire de Belfort in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Chavanatte is located on 372 m, about 17 km east-southeast of the town of Belfort ( a straight line ). The former village street lines extending in the lowlands of the Burgundian Gate, in the large basin and on the hillside east of the creek Suarcine.

The area of ​​3.86 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the gently undulating countryside in the Burgundian Gate ( trouée de Belfort ). The central part of the area is traversed in south-north direction from the trough of the Suarcine, which provides for the drainage to Allaine. This trough is flanked on both sides by a plateau, which is on average 380 m. It is mostly covered with arable and meadow land, but also shows some of larger forest areas. In hollows and valleys there are several ponds that were created for fish farming. To the east, the municipality's area extends over the plateau with the Bois le Fief to the stream of Lutter, a right tributary of the Suarcine. With 391 m is reached on the hill southeast of the village is the highest elevation of Chavanatte.

Neighboring communities of Chavanatte are Chavannes -les- Grands in the north, Altenach in the east, the south and Suarce Florimont in the southwest.

History

Is first mentioned Chavanatte in 1458. The village, which was under the suzerainty of the Habsburg, was part of the rule Florimont. Together with the Sundgau Chavanatte came with the 1648 Peace of Westphalia to the French crown. Since 1793, the village belonged to the Department of Haut -Rhin, however, remained in 1871 as part of the Territoire de Belfort as opposed to the rest of Alsace in France.

The village is characterized by different half-timbered houses in the traditional style of the Sundgauvian from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Population

With 166 inhabitants (1 January 2011 ) is one of the smallest municipalities Chavanatte of the department of Territoire de Belfort. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1886 180 people were still counted ), a continuous population growth was recorded since the early 1970s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Chavanatte was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ), fish farming and forestry embossed village. Even today, the inhabitants live on the merits of the activity in the first sector. Outside of the primary sector, there are few jobs in the village. Some employed persons are also commuters who engage in the surrounding larger towns of their work.

The village is located off the major road links on a secondary road, leading from Suarce by Chavannes -les- Grands. Another road links is with Romagny.
