Vauthiermont

Vauthiermont ( formerly German Walter Berg) is a town in the French department of Territoire de Belfort in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Vauthiermont is located on 392 m, about 14 km east-northeast of the town of Belfort ( a straight line ). The village is located in the Burgundy gate, on the plateau in the foothills of the Vosges, on a hill between the valleys of Ruisseau de Saint -Nicolas in the west and Traubach in the east.

The area of ​​4.74 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the weakly in relief landscape in the Burgundian Gate ( trouée de Belfort ). The main part of the area is occupied by a plateau, which is on average 380 m. It is mostly covered with arable and meadow land, but also shows some forest areas. To the west of the village is the headwaters of the Loutre. Further to the west of the municipality floor extends into the valley of Ruisseau de Saint- Nicolas, which ensures the drainage of the area to the south of the Bourbeuse to Allaine. To the east the land rises slightly to the majority of the wooded plateau of Haut- Bois, in the 412 m, the highest elevation of Vauthiermont is achieved. This plateau forms the watershed between the basins of the Rhone ( to the west) and the Rhine (east ).

Neighboring communities of Vauthiermont are Angeot in the north, Bellemagny and Saint -Cosme in the east, Reppe and Fontaine in the south and Larivière in the West.

History

The first mention in writing Vauthiermont in the year 796 under the name Walthenberg in a document of the monastery Murbach. In the 14th century belonged to the rule Vauthiermont Rougemont- le -Château, but in 1363 came the rights over the village to a noble family of Angeot. Middle of the 14th century came Vauthiermont under the suzerainty of the Habsburg dynasty. During the Thirty Years' War, the village was badly affected. Together with the Sundgau Vauthiermont came with the 1648 Peace of Westphalia to the French crown. Since 1793, the village belonged to the Department of Haut -Rhin, however, remained in 1871 as part of the Territoire de Belfort as opposed to the rest of Alsace in France. As a border town Vauthiermont held from 1871 to 1918 the function of a customs post between France and the German Empire. Since 1997 Vauthiermont is affiliated with 12 other municipalities for municipal association Communauté de communes du Tilleul.

Attractions

The church of Saint -Antoine was consecrated in December 1770 and enlarged in 1845. It has impressive stained glass. Opposite the church is the built in 1842 Mairie -École ( municipal and school house ) of red Vosges sandstone in the typical architecture of the 19th century. The old town is characterized by half-timbered houses from the 18th and 19th century in the characteristic Sundgauer style.

Population

With 232 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Vauthiermont one of the small communities of the department of Territoire de Belfort. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1891 313 persons were still counted ), a continuous population growth was recorded since the early 1970s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Vauthiermont was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. In addition, there are today some of the local small business enterprises. Meanwhile, the village has been transformed into a residential community. Many workers are also commuters who engage in urban Belfort and Mulhouse their work.

The village is located off the major road links on a secondary road, leading from Fontaine after Bellemagny. The nearest links to the A36 motorway, which runs through the municipality, is located at a distance of about five kilometers. Further road links exist with Angeot, Reppe and Bréchaumont.
