Chavannes-les-Grands

Chavannes -les- Grands ( formerly Großschaffnatt German ) is a town in the French department of Territoire de Belfort in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Chavannes -les- Grands is located on 369 m, about 15 km east-southeast of the town of Belfort ( a straight line ). The village is located in the lowlands of the Burgundian Gate, in the hollow of the village Bach west of the Valley of Suarcine.

The area of ​​6.93 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the gently undulating countryside in the Burgundian Gate ( trouée de Belfort ). The area of operation is broken by several running in the south-north direction waters, of which the Suarcine is the most important and ensures the drainage to Allaine. It takes, however, outside the church floor, the Lutter ( forms on a short stretch of the eastern border), the village stream of Chavannes and two other tributaries to. Between the nearly parallel valleys, slight hills, but the tower above the adjacent valley floor rarely more than 20 m rise. With 385 meters, the highest elevation of Chavannes -les- Grands is achieved south of the village. The area is predominantly covered with arable and meadow land, but also shows some of larger forest areas. To the west of the municipality floor extends into the woods Bois du Flandrier and Bois de Ragie de la Dame. In hollows and valleys there are several ponds that were created for fish farming.

Neighboring communities of Chavannes -les- Grands are Magny in the north, and Manspach Altenach in the east, and Chavanatte Florimont in the south and Vellescot, Brittany and Montreux -Jeune in the West.

History

Chavannes -les- Grands 1291 first mentioned in a document. In the first half of the 14th century the village came under the suzerainty of the Habsburg, after which the place name was Germanized to wholesale Schaffnatt. Together with the Sundgau came Chavannes -les- Grands with the 1648 Peace of Westphalia to the French crown. Since 1793, the village belonged to the Department of Haut -Rhin, however, remained in 1871 as part of the Territoire de Belfort as opposed to the rest of Alsace in France.

Places of interest in Chavannes -les- Grands include the Church of Sainte -Odile and several half-timbered houses in the traditional style of the Sundgauvian.

Population

With 320 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Chavannes -les- Grands one of the small communities of the department of Territoire de Belfort. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1886 436 persons were still counted ), was from 1950 to 1980 again recorded a population growth. Since then, the population remains at an almost constant level.

Economy and infrastructure

Chavannes -les- Grands was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ), fish farming and forestry embossed village. In addition, there are today some of the local small business enterprises. Meanwhile, the village has been transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in the larger towns in the area and in the agglomeration Belfort.

The village is located off the major road links on a secondary road that leads from Delle by Danne Marie. The nearest links to the A36 motorway is located at a distance of about 16 kilometers. Further road links exist with Chavanatte and Montreux -Chateau.
