Florimont

Florimont ( formerly German Blumenberg ) is a town in the French department of Territoire de Belfort in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Florimont is located on 384 m above sea level, five kilometers east of Delle and about 21 km southeast of the town of Belfort ( a straight line ). The village is located in the transition zone between the plains of the Burgundian gate and the northern foothills of the Jura Mountains, in the valley of Coeuvatte at the northern foot of the heights of Mont Flori, near the border with Switzerland.

The area of ​​18.19 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the gently undulating countryside in the Burgundian Gate ( trouée de Belfort ). The southern part of the area is traversed in southeast-northwest direction from the up to 500 m wide Talniederung the Coeuvatte, which provides for drainage to Allaine. Takes you north of the village with the Vendline an important tributary to. Flanked the valley in the south of the densely wooded heights of Florimont on which 505 m is the highest point of the municipality is achieved, and the plateau of Saint -André. Between the valleys of Coeuvatte and Vendline Florimont share in the amount Les Ragies (454 m).

To the north, the municipality's area extends in a long but narrow strip on the wide plateau of the Burgundian Gate, which is on average 400 m. It is partly covered with arable and meadow land, partly with forest ( including the extended Grand Bois ). In hollows and valleys there are numerous ponds that were created for fish farming. This northern part of the municipality is drained by the Ruisseau de l' ecrevisse to Bourbeuse.

To Flori include the hamlet of Mont Saint -André (418 m) on the plateau south of the Coeuvatte Valley and various individual farms in the clearings north of Grand Bois. Neighboring communities of Florimont are Vellescot, Chavannes -les- Grands and Chavanatte in the north, and Suarce Courtelevant in the east, Courcelles and the Swiss Boncourt in the south and dent Faverois and Boron in the West.

History

During the Roman period the important traffic route of Epomanduodurum ( Mandeure ) crossed to Augusta Raurica the municipality. From that time witness the remains of a watchtower. Florimont belonged first to Alsace before it got to the Counts of Burgundy in the year 895. The village formed a fief, which left the bishops of Basel Count of Ferrette in the 11th century. At that time a castle was built above Florimont. The village was fortified and quickly grew in importance. The rule, which belonged to the Blumenberg family, comprised in the 13th century the neighboring villages Courcelles, Courtelevant, Réchésy, Lepuix - Neuf, Chavanatte, Suarce, Boron, Grosne and Faverois. In the first half of the 14th century the village came under the suzerainty of the Habsburg dynasty. Since the 15th century a market and two annual fairs were performed weekly in Flori Mont.

Since the 16th century, the lords of Pfirt to Florimont were well off here. The Florimont castle was destroyed by fire in 1583, but subsequently rebuilt. During the Thirty Years' War, the village and the castle were looted and destroyed by Swedish troops. Together with the Sundgau came Florimont with the 1648 Peace of Westphalia to the French crown. The ruins came along with the rest owned by Francois Nicolas de Salomon after the death of his father Gaspard Nicolas de Barbaud de Florimont in 1783 also to the Lords of Pfirt.

Since 1793 Florimont belonged to the Department of Haut -Rhin, however, remained in 1871 as part of the Territoire de Belfort as opposed to the rest of Alsace in France.

Population

With 439 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Florimont is one of the small communities of the department of Territoire de Belfort. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1881 425 persons were still counted ), a continuous population growth was recorded since the early 1960s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Florimont was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ), fish farming and forestry embossed village. In addition, there are now several companies of local small businesses. Meanwhile, the village has been transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in Delle and Belfort and Montbéliard in the agglomerations.

The village has good transport links. It is located near the main road D463 which leads from dent to Saint - Louis. The nearest links to the A36 motorway is located at a distance of about 20 kilometers. Further road links exist with Courtelevant and Courcelles.

Attractions

In the village center is the parish church Eglise de la Présentation de la Vierge, which was in 1863 rebuilt in the Gothic Revival style. It has a rich interior (furniture from the 18th century ) and replaced the old church, of which only the tower is obtained ( in the cemetery).

The village is characterized by different farmhouses in traditional Alsatian style of the 18th century. On a ledge above Florimont there is a round castle tower which was built after the French Revolution by Gustave Armand Henri, Comte de Reiset in memory of the former castle and bears the arms of the Lords of Pfirt. Previously, the ruins of the former castle was passed through several hands, and had, among others, found in the possession of Joseph Bruat from Grandvillars, the father of the late Admiral Armand Joseph Bruat.
