Des Plaines [ dɛspleɪnz ] is a city in Cook County in the northeast of the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2000, Des Plaines had 58,720 inhabitants.

Des Plaines is located in the Chicago metropolitan area, 28 km north- west of Chicago and 37 km south of Waukegan in close proximity to O'Hare International Airport. The Des Plaines River flows through the city, east of the city center. The income of the working population span a wide range, which is also reflected in real estate prices that range between $ 30,000 and more than $ 1,000,000.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 37.6 km2, 37.3 km2 and 0.3 km2 water. The age distribution was 22.3 % under the age of 18, 7.5 % from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44 years and 44.23 % between 45 and 64 years. 17.2 % of the population was older than 65 years. For every 100 females inhabitants are 93.6 male inhabitants.

The median household income was $ 53,638, the median family income $ 65,806. The per capita income was $ 24,146. About 3.0% of families are below the poverty line.
