Life and career

Career and junior career

Edouard Roger -Vasselin is the son of French tennis player Christophe Roger -Vasselin, who in 1983 reached the semi-finals of the French Open and reached to Rank 29 world tennis rankings. He had taught his son early to play tennis, and so Édouard could already celebrate successes as a junior in the French room.

2001-2003: First experience as a professional

In 2001, Edouard Roger -Vasselin then into the professional camp and began to play on futures and satellite tournaments. A year later, he won his first Futures title in Denmark, and was then fed into the top 500 in the world rankings. Since 2003 he also joined in tournaments in the ATP Challenger Tour, and reached in September 2003 in Kiev for the first time a challenger semifinal. At the French Open in 2003 he was given a wildcard for the qualifications, but different in the second qualifying round. In doubles, he resigned along with Jo -Wilfried Tsonga in the first round.

2004-2006: ATP debut and first Challenger title

In 2004, he was able to reach a total of six additional Challenger semifinals. He also announced in July 2004 in Stuttgart his ATP debut when he enlisted as a lucky loser into the main draw. There, however, he lost to his compatriot Richard Gasquet. In September 2004, in Shanghai, he also qualified for the main draw, and won against Nathan Healey his first ATP match before he had to retire in the second round against eventual finalists Lars Burgsmüller. He then rose for the first time briefly in the top 200 in the world rankings.

In June 2005, Roger- Vasselin won in Montauban his first Challenger title. He also won two Challenger tournaments in doubles in Scheveningen and Tampere this year. After he had in the meantime reached rank 159 had hitherto been his best world ranking placement, he lost for the year due to several Erstrundenniederlagen again world ranking points. In August 2006, he was dropped to No. 436, but could then reach in Saint Petersburg Samarkand and two Challenger finals in a row. In addition, he still won this year a Futures tournament, and was able to defend his title in Tampere Challenger in doubles.

2007-2009: Grand Slam debut and first-time entry into the Top 100

After he had reached in February 2007 in Besançon another Challenger Finals, to Edouard Roger -Vasselin could qualify in Casablanca first time in almost two and a half years back for an ATP tournament in April 2007. After a first round victory over the top 100 players Martín Vassallo Argüello he left in the second round against Paul -Henri Mathieu. For the 2007 French Open Roger- Vasselin was given a wildcard for the main draw and reached the same for his Grand Slam debut the third round. He defeated again a top 100 player Radek Stepanek with. A month later at Wimbledon, Roger -Vasselin qualified for the main draw and was able after a victory over the set at position 24 Juan Ignacio Chela again reach the third round. Subsequently, he was first out in the top 100, and reached number 82 in his best ever world ranking placement. Later in the year he went to three other ATP tournaments, but different in each case in the first round.

2008 Edouard Roger -Vasselin played a total of six ATP tournaments, but could reach the second round only in Chennai and Amersfoort. On Challenger level, a final in Mons could reach, he also won a doubles title in Surbiton, and reached the Australian Open on the side of Gilles Simon in the second round this year. In the world rankings, he fell in the meantime up to rank 190 back, and ended the year ranked 166th

The year 2009 started initially without major highlights for Edouard Roger -Vasselin. He won two doubles Challenger title in Cherbourg and Segovia, he also managed to qualify for the main draw at Wimbledon, where he lost in five sets against Stefan Koubek. In October 2009, he then succeeded in the ATP Tournament Tokyo a sensation: After successful qualification he met in the first round on the reigning U.S. Open champion Juan Martín del Potro, whom he defeated in straight sets. After another victory over Jurgen Melzer Roger -Vasselin reached an ATP quarter-final, but where he had no chance against Lleyton Hewitt for the first time.

2010-2011: More Challenger title

In March 2010, Edouard Roger -Vasselin won in Sarajevo by a final victory over Karol Beck his second Challenger singles titles. In addition, he also won in the doubles competition, which already was the third doubles title this year to Noumea and Cherbourg. For the French Open, he got a wildcard like in 2007, and defeated in the first round in five sets Kevin Anderson, but had to retire against the eventual semi-finalists Tomas Berdych. After he had reached two additional Challenger finals in Orbetello and Saint- Rémy as the year progresses, Roger -Vasselin was conducted in September 2010 for the first time in over two years for a week back in the top 100 in the world rankings. In September and October 2010, he was able to qualify for more ATP tournaments, and thereby reach the second round in Kuala Lumpur. A week earlier he had reached in Metz in the doubles alongside Richard Gasquet the semi-finals, but due to an injury Gasquets they could not compete.

The year 2011 began for Edouard Roger -Vasselin at the ATP tournament in Chennai, where he qualified for the main draw, among others, by defeating Milos Raonic, but there Richard Gasquet defeated. After missed the Australian Open qualifying Roger -Vasselin was recorded as qualifier against Arnaud Clément his first ATP match win this year in February 2011 in Marseille, before he retired to the set at position 2 Tomáš Berdych. At the U.S. Open Roger- Vasselin resigned in early September 2011 in the first round in three short sentences to eventual eighth finalists Gilles Müller. For this he was able to celebrate the following week in Saint- Rémy another Challenger double success: First, he won the singles final against Arnaud Clément Subsequently, he along with Pierre -Hugues Herbert also won the doubles title.

2012: First ATP title in double

After he had completed the year ranked 106 in the world rankings, Edouard Roger -Vasselin was directly qualified for the 2012 Australian Open.
