Etoy

Etoy ( [ ɛtwa ], Provençal in the local dialect [(a) ɛtja ː s ] ) is a municipality in the district of Morges in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Etoy is located on 454 m above sea level. M., 7 km west-southwest of the district capital Morges ( straight line ). The village stretches along the slightly inclined slope on the north to the south of Lake Geneva, to the east of the valley of the Aubonne, a scenic location about 80 m above the lake level of Lake Geneva.

The area of ​​4.9 km ² large municipality area includes a section north of Lake Geneva. The communal land extends northward to the gently sloping hillside to below the hill Châtelard where 495 m above sea level. Population

With 2838 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Etoy belongs to the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Vaud. Of the 85.2 % inhabitants are French-speaking, 5.2 % and 4.1 % portugiesischsprachig in German (as of 2000). The population of Etoy amounted in 1850 to 474 residents in 1900 to 663 inhabitants. Since 1980 (891 inhabitants), a rapid population increase was recorded with almost a tripling of the population within 20 years.

Economy

History

Finds from the Neolithic period, the La Tène period and the foundations of a Roman villa are evidence of a very early settlement of the municipality. The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1145 under the name Stuie. Later published numerous other spellings: Estui ( 1167 ), Stoy ( 1177 ), Estue ( 1215), Estuve ( 1228 ), Estuy ( 1269 ), Estuez ( 1349 ), Stuez ( 1379 ) and Estuey ( 1430).

The 1145 mentioned priory of Saint-Nicolas Etoy and belonged to the Canons of the Great Saint Bernard, but was under the direct supervision of the Lords of Aubonne. Since the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536 Etoy shared the fortunes of Aubonne. Attractions

The church of Saint -Nicolas comes to important parts of the 13th century, but they learned during the Reformation, a transformation. The massive front tower was once used as a defensive tower. At the site of the Priory, a castle was built in the 16th century, its present appearance dates from the 18th century.
