Gemona del Friuli

Gemona del Friuli ( Friulian Glemone, Slovenian humic, German Klemaun ) is a town with 11,076 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012).

Geography

Gemona del Friuli is located on the Tagliamento, north of Udine and at the southern exit of the Valcanale. The town spreads out at the foot of a mighty mountain.

History

In the Middle Ages Gemona independent municipality under the supremacy of the Patriarch of Aquileia. Since 1420 it belonged to Venice.

On May 6, 1976 Friuli, located in an earthquake zone, was hit by a massive earthquake whose epicenter was located near Gemona. It reached a value of 6.5 on the Richter scale and killed 965 people. Gemona and the neighboring communities Venzone and Osoppo have been badly damaged. The famous cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta ( Holy Mary of the Assumption) collapsed the right side of the ship and the Campanile. Meanwhile, everything was set up as good as possible, and the Campanile ( bell tower ). In the cathedral since the earthquake, the columns are wrong.
