Henry M. Arens

Henry M. Arens (actually Henry Martin Arens ) ( born November 21, 1873 in Bausenrode, today Finnentrop; † October 6, 1963 in Jordan, Minnesota ) was a German immigrant in the United States. He was a farmer and politician. He was, among other times, Lieutenant Governor of the State of Minnesota and member of the House of Representatives of the United States.

Life

Arens was posthumous son of a farmer. He attended elementary school and headed by John Dornseiffer agricultural winter school in Fretter. With no prospect of inheritance of the parental farm in 1889, he emigrated to the USA and went to an uncle in Jordan ( Minnesota). After working in a butcher shop he bought there own farm. This he managed until 1947. Besides he devoted himself to the interests of the farmers. He founded the local dairy organization and was its president. On a state level, he was vice president of the central dairy cooperatives. He was also vice president of the Association of Minnesota ranchers. He was also active in local politics.

Arens was a member of the Farmer-Labor Party of Minnesota. For this he was in 1919, in spite of his German origin, was elected to the House of Representatives from Minnesota. This he was a member until 1922. The Senate of the State he belonged then to 1923-1930. In 1931 he became vice governor of Minnesota. Since 1932, Arens was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for the Minnesota Farmer-Labor Party. This he was a member until his deselection 1934. His attempt in 1936 to collect again in the House of Representatives failed.

He remained his home Sauerland connected and visited after the Second World War twice his hometown.
