Hikueru

Hikueru is an atoll of the Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia. The nearest atoll is the Tekokota Atoll, which lies 22 km north. Hikeru has an oval shape of 15 km long and 9.5 km wide. The deep lagoon of the atoll has no navigable access to the sea. Hikueru is the capital of the municipality Hikueru.

History

The atoll was discovered in 1768 by Louis Antoine de Bougainville. Just so the island of Domingo de Boenechea 1774 visited. He gave the atoll named San Juan.

Jack London describes in his novel "South Sea Tales" a hurricane which swept over Hikeru. In this storm, which actually devastated in 1903 Hikueru and Hao, 371 people died on both atolls.

Tapupati in the northwest of the atoll is the most important place, in 2000 an airfield was created. Important sources of income of the residents are Kopraherstellung and pearl farming. Until the 1970s Hikueru was a center for deep-sea divers.
