Marokau

Marokau is an atoll of the Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia. The atoll is 53 km south-east of Hikueru away and is only separated by a 2 km wide waterway of Ravahere. The expansion of the triangular atoll reaches a width of 21 km at a length of 20 km.

Marokau and Ravahere form the Deux Iles Groupes. Marokau belongs to the municipality Hikueru. The most important town on the island is Vaiori, this is on an island at the northern end of the atoll.

History

Louis Antoine de Bougainville discovered the island in 1768.

1903, the atoll was hit by a severe storm that killed more than 100 people.

The lagoon of Marokau was from the 19th century until 1965, one of the most important for pearl cultivation of the Tuamotu Archipelago.

Today, the inhabitants live mainly from Kopraproduktion. On the islands of the atoll and Motus many coconut trees grow.
