Hospital de Órbigo

Hospital de Órbigo is a comune ( municipality ) on the Camino de Santiago in the province of León Autonomous Community of Castile -Leon.

In the Middle Ages there was already a small village on the left bank of the River Órbigo. This village had, around the formed around the church of Santa Maria was named after the bridge Puente de Órbigo. End of the sixteenth century was another settlement on the right bank of the river near the ancient pilgrimage route Camino Francés. There, the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, built a hospital (Spanish Hospital) and the place was named Hospital de Órbigo.

The bridge Puente de Orbigo became famous for an event during the Holy Year of 1434, the so-called Paso Honroso the Leonese knight Suero de Quinones.
