Hyūga Province

Hyūga (日 向 国Japanese, Hyūga no kuni ), also Nisshū (日 州) and Kōshū (向 州), was one of the old province of Japan on the east coast of the island of Kyūshū. It corresponds to the modern Miyazaki Prefecture.

Hyuga bordered by the provinces of Bungo, Higo, Ōsumi and Satsuma.

The old capital ( Kokufu ) was at today's district Migimatsu by Saito. During the Sengoku period, the area was often divided into a northern fief around the Castle Agata in the modern Nobeoka and a southern fiefs around the Castle Obi near the modern Nichinan. The southern fief was held by the Shimazu clan of Satsuma Province adjacent during much of this time.
