Jaakko Tallus

Jaakko Tapio Tallus ( born February 23, 1981 in Lieksa ) is a retired Finnish Nordic skier.

Career

Early years

Tallus, who started for the club Lieksan Hiihtoseura, began skiing at the age of four years with the support of his father, who also operate skiing. At seven, he began jumping in his hometown Lieksa. From 1991, he gained his first success in Regional Championships. In 1997 he made ​​his debut in B- World Cup for the Finnish National B Team. The end of 1997 he moved with his family to Vuokatti, there to visit the sports school.

In the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 1998 in St. Moritz Tallus could win the title in the team competition, together with Mikko Keskinarkaus, Samppa Lajunen and Hannu Manninen. In December 1998, he for the first time the win was in Taivalkoski within the framework of B- World Cup. He also won both competitions in Vuokatti. Then he moved to the A- squad and has already celebrated his first World Cup on 3 January 1999 in Schonach with second place his first podium.

Breakthrough in the World Cup

At the beginning of the 1999/2000 season pass Tallus Vuokatti again two top - 10 finishes. Also in Steamboat Springs, he just missed his second podium in fourth. In the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2000 in Štrbské Pleso he again won gold with the team. Four weeks later he was in Chaux- Neuve in second place on the podium again. In the 2000/ 01 season Tallus modest start with rank 20 and 42 in Kuopio. In January 2001, he succeeded in Reit im Winkl again a place among the top ten. In Park City with the team to the team he managed to the first mass start World Cup victory. In the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2001 in Poland Karpacz Tallus won three silver medals.

Just a few days after the successes at the Junior World Championships he competed at the 2001 Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti. Together with Jari Mantila, Hannu Manninen and Samppa Lajunen he cashed after Norway and Austria the bronze medal in the team competition. In the sprint Tallus just missed his first individual medal in fourth. At the end of the season he also reached the World Cup again good rankings and finished the season in fourth place overall.

Olympic victory

Also in the 2001/ 02 season, he could show good, but less consistent performance. At the last World Cup before the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City Tallus was the first time in the season on the podium. To so successful was Olympia for him. He won in Gundersen 's singles silver medal, after leading the ski jumping. With the team he won gold in the sprint and he was only 5 seconds behind Felix Gottwald at the bronze medal over and finished fourth. Already in his first World Cup after the Games in Lahti, he again reached third place. Finally, the penultimate competition of the season in Oslo he reached the best result of the season with second place.

In the Summer Grand Prix 2002 Tallus achieved two fourth places in Winterberg and Klingenthal and thus reached in the overall standings for the second time after 2000 the seventh rank.

Drop in performance

From the season 2002/ 03 Tallus struggled with a significant drop in performance. So he ended up at the opening event in Kuusamo only ranked 47 and so far behind the points. Although jumped out points for Tallus again in the next World Cup, he failed to make it to the world class and could not achieve a podium ranks. Also in the Nordic World Ski Championships 2003 in Val di Fiemme, it was for Tallus not successful in the individual competitions. Only with the team he defended the bronze medal in the team competition.

Finally, in the episode, it took until January 2004 to Tallus landed back in the world rankings. With the team he won the Team World Cup in Oberstdorf. In the individual World Cup, he was able to convince the end of February in Oslo back in fourth only. However, this was just an exception. Podiums were continued. In the Nordic World Ski Championships 2005 in Oberstdorf Tallus remained with the team without a medal. In the end, it was enough for the team to only fourth.

After Tallus in January 2006 reached two fourth places in Val di Fiemme, he traveled now 24 -year-old Finnish as hope to the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. In two individual competitions he was fifth, with the team he won bronze.

Comeback in the world rankings

The end of 2006 succeeded Tallus again increased to catch up with the world leaders. On 14 January 2007 he was in Lago di Tesero to the team Mass Start World Cup again at the top of the podium. End of career

From the 2008/ 09 season, jumped and ran Tallus top of the world usually just behind. Also in the Nordic World Ski Championships 2009 in Liberec, he could not achieve any more success. The team missed eighth clearly the defense of the title from the year 2007.

After the 2010 Winter Olympics were unsuccessful for Tallus in Vancouver and he was in the single of the normal hill only 38 and on the large hill only 32 and also with the team only reached seventh, he ended his active sports career in June 2010.

Tallus now lives in Kuopio. He has a sister and a brother.
